Islamophobia and Muslim communities On Trial In The U.S.A.
Hate. Fear. Threats. Violence.
Negative perceptions of Islam and Islamophobia are real and as they manifest themselves, the results cause physical affects on individuals and communities. Whether individuals agree with other lifestyles and religious practices such as those of the religion Islam, it is unjustifiable when those dislikes and or fears are manifested into an intrusion of basic human and civil rights.
HISTORY AND BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMOPHOBIA AND HATE CRIMES
Islamophobia Defined:
According to the 1991 Runnymede Trust Report, Islamophobia is an "unfounded hostility towards Muslims, and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims" [here].
Hate Crime Defined:
According to the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), a hate crime is "any criminal act or attempted criminal act directed against a person(s) based on the victim's actual or perceived race, nationality, religion, gender, disability, or sexual orientation" [here].
Scholarly and Academic Analysis:
Scholar of Palestinian-Americans as well as a professor of Literature at the University of Columbia, Edward Said, modernity and modern conception of race sit at the modern conception of race...and when conquest has taken place, the rhetoric was through Muslim impurity. According to Professor Sohail Daulatzai from the University of California, Irvine "we have to recognize that this is not something new, that its been happening for centuries."
According to Dr. Hatem Bazian at one of his course lectures of Islamophobia as the University of California, that Islamophobia has been used as a way of: "instructing the commodity of fear as a ideology of fear. Hitler used fear, Germans the 'injured party' by the Jewish people. The culture of fear rationalizes the responses of fear...immigration [is then] no longer an issue of economic mobility of one group from one place to another...[but rather] it removes immigration from a post-colonial analysis...and it points to a distinctive cultural difference--population growth--between Muslims and the West."
Though organizations such as Campus Watch founded by Daniel Pipes argue that Islamophobia doesn't exist [here], the hate crimes against Muslims are evident and proven through a system of legal justification [here].
Brief Statistics
The public’s opinion of Islam fell from 40% in 2001 to 30% percent in 2010 according to the Pew Research Center. 45% of Americans agree that Islam is at odds with American values (Public Research Institute, 2010). A Time Magazine poll revealed that 28% of voters do not believe Muslims should be eligible to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, and nearly one-third think that they should be barred from running for president.
